Vienna during winter, what to do, eat and see

On 26th December at 6 pm, we were at the main station from Vienna searching for a hotel. Honestly, I was expecting to see more locals on the street but everything was closed. It was the 2nd day of Christmas after all.

Can you imagine visiting Vienna after Christmas? After so much food, presents, what better way to relax than a city break in Vienna?

Vienna is such a beautiful city known for its lovely Christmas markets, Viennese cappuccino, and crunchy schnitzel. It was an amazing trip, we could visit everything at our own pace without having to worry about queues. It was exactly as it should be, a relaxed art trip.

In only 3 days, it’s hard to visit everything and I like to wonder on the streets and take lots of pictures. In this post, I wrote about Vienna, what to do, eat and see.

1 Christmas markets

How could I miss the famous Christmas markets from Vienna especially I’m a sucker for Christmas?

The first market we visited was the Rathaus market from the City Hall, a place surrounded by dozens of shiny lights and lovely cottages with Christmas decorations. You could hear Christmas carols. The cold outside, the colorful lights, the music, and mulled wine, everything was so magical and you could feel the festive season.

Vienna has lots of Christmas markets, the Rathaus market, Village Maria-Theresien Platz or Schönbrunn Palace are some of the best.

The mulled wine was a bit expensive, 8 euro per glass but you could keep these lovely mugs.

Vienna, what to eat

I like trying local food and I’m always in search of local places. This is my favorite part, to see how the locals are living and eating their food.

Café Schwarzenberg, one of the last cafes from Vienna upholding the typical atmosphere and tradition of a Viennese cafe. It’s visited by both locals and tourists and the desserts are delicious.

I ordered the well known Viennese cappuccino and a cheese strudel surrounded by vanilla custard. My boyfriend tried their dump plums fried omelet with plum jam. I know, sounds horrible but it was divine.

We couldn’t leave Vienna without trying the schnitzel Viennese. We ended the day by eating at their oldest and best place from Vienna, FiglmĂĽller BäckerstraĂźe! I’m not a schnitzel lover but this one was very good! You couldn’t feel the oil, I liked it was crunchy on the outside and soft inside. Only thinking and I’m drooling!

Funny thing: the place has a shiny yellow key to unlock the toilet. Just like in medieval times.

Tip: Book a table on https://www.tripadvisor.com/ and you will avoid the queue. We stayed for 1 hour but it worth it!

Book a concert at Schonbrunn Orangerie, the place where Mozart himself played. It was truly magical with the Christmas trees and the concert was amazing.

Vienna it’s amazing, everywhere you go, you see an interesting building, sculpture. Wandering on the streets we’ve discovered Majolica House architected by Otto Wagner in 1899 near Naschmarkt. It’s impressive by the contrast between the two buildings, one it’s colorful with red flowers and the other one is with golden medallions and garlands. It’s like there were 2 different people who designed the building. It’s only one person but in different periods.

Hofburg Palace – I’m not with museums but knowing the kings lived there, I had to see it. I was totally mesmerized by the place. I liked how the entire palace opens up with the two beautiful marble stairs. The flower decorations around the windows and the ceiling with its drawings. I could imagine the hundred of balls organized in this luxurious location. Worth every minute there.

I wonder if I could host a ball here

Quartier Museum has a large courtyard with contemporary art. It’s a great idea when it’s cold outside.

Can you believe the paintings are made by young artists?

I like to walk and Vienna was perfect for it. It is so nice to walk on the narrow streets and to discover a boutique with vintage jewels or a nice bar wine.

At night the Christmas lights created a more romantic atmosphere and the buildings seemed more beautiful than on daylight. The most vivid memory from Vienna is the Sissi Museum and in front of it was a horse carriage. It was like I traveled in another time full of romance.

I hope you enjoyed as much as I did. Let me know other things to do in Vienna.
