After 3 beautiful days, I’m waiting for on boarding to return home! I love my country but I’m a bit sad because I have to leave this beautiful city.
Is very hard to describe Rome, delicious food and an amazing architecture! A truly incursion in the past. Are you looking for a city break? Rome is the perfect location.
When I’m visiting a city for the first time, I want to see the main attractions. In many cases, I found myself eating in the touristy areas. The food is good but it’s not like the local food. So, this time, I tried to go where locals go, this meant often to be outside of the touristy areas.
So, here I am, at 6 AM at the airport in Rome searching for a coffee shop to change some money to buy a bus ticket because I couldn’t pay by card. I don’t know how or when, but I forgot my backpack at the coffee shop. You can imagine my desperation when I realized it’s missing. Luckily, after 1 minute I found it in the exact place. Not my best start in Rome, I could say.
Tip! Make sure you have coins or small bills with you! You will need it to buy tickets for the bus / metro from the ticket machine. And, no you can’t pay by card. The ticket is valid only 100 minutes.
On this trip I realized how important is to plan a part of it and leaving the rest for discovering. My favorite part is walking on the streets without a specific direction and see the old buildings admiring their architecture. You never know what gems you might discover.
Rome is a beautiful city with lots and lots of places. Is pretty hard to visit everything in just 3 days.
So, here is my idea of a city break in Rome.
First, the Colosseum and Forum Romano is my favorite area. Mainly because everywhere you go, you see old buildings and start imagining how was back then, how big it was the Imperium Romano and what an amazing architecture. I was impressed by the Colosseum, I thought is just an old building but is a truly masterpiece, it’s size is overwhelming.
Tip! Watch out for the people who want to talk to you. They want one thing: to sell you bracelets, false tickets with skip the line. My advice is to buy them from the ticket office.
Forum Romano – looks beautiful but we didn’t enter because it was a 5 hours guide and we didn’t have enough time. Next time, definitely I’ll visit.
Tip: First Sunday of the month the entrance is free for the majority of museums, monuments but be prepared to stay in a very long queue like me.
Go and see Traian’s column and the Fatherland house, a stunning white building. In the back of the column there are some lovely old apartments, Italian style and some trattorias.
Rome is known for its rooftops so we went to a rooftop bar nearby Traian Column. I can’t say the view impressed me maybe because of the rain but I liked to stay there and enjoy a glass of Aperol and just relax. It was my oasis in Rome.
For a romantic night, head out to Fontana dei Trevi, piazza Navona and Pantheon. Its lights creates a romantic atmosphere and the architecture sends you back in time. Make sure to go after 10 PM, it’s less crowded.
Also, go and visit Basilica San Pietro, Vatican museum and the piazza San Pietro. I don’t have words to describe them. Maybe some pictures will do:-)
The best part of Rome is the food! I’m a foodie, I love pasta.
This is my top places to eat – where the locals hang out.
Romolo e Remo is a local Italian place! It’s near San Giovanni metro station! I recommend to walk from Colosseum because the road is beautiful. There is a very nice park and the streets, Italian style with colorful apartments. It’s a joy to see them.
The place was full of locals maybe because it was Sunday! It’s the kind of place where to spend your Sunday with the family. The staff is great, polite and knows what to recommend. It’s my favorite place from Rome, delicious food, great atmosphere and less touristy.
Try their lasagna, it was delicious, I could feel how the pastry is melting in the mouth. I’ve heard they have a great pizza but only after 10 pm😞
For something special, like an anniversary I recommend Antico Arco. They have a menu a carte. We chose the testing menu, half portions for 78 euro with 2 appetizers, 2 pasta, 2 main courses and 2 desserts. After all these, they gave us a delicious mousse of tiramisu. I still think of it:-) It was so airy and so light.
The staff is very nice and they knew every main course and the wine list. Their list is huge with prices varying from 20-200 euros the bottle. Yes, the bill was big but it’s worth it!
Aranccio Picolo is indeed a hidden gem. It’s very close of Fontana de Trevi. Good food, Italian atmosphere and a very nice staff. I liked the waiters had moustache. I don’t know if is something specific or simply coincidence. The lava cake was delicious.
For sure Rome has a lot to offer beside the city centre but you need time to visit each neighborhood. I wanted to visit Travestere, I heard it’s a very nice area but I didn’t have enough time.
I’m in love with Rome, it’s full of history, delicious food, amazing gelato and a very nice atmosphere. It’s a city full of energy. Another beautiful place is Cyprus.
Yes, if you go to Fontana de Trevi or Vatican Museum there are many tourists and it’s very crowded. I’m not a fan of crowded places, I prefer hang out on nice places and see how the locals live instead of visiting museums, churches.
Rome, you were amazing, I can’t wait to see you again!
Having small bills when we travel is our biggest downfall, and definitely a GREAT tip. We always take money out in the country’s currency from local ATMs. Of course, when we do that, we get GIANT bills that no one can break. It makes tipping, taxis, and even some food hard. I hate not being able to tip someone because I don’t have any change. We spend a lot of the trip trying to trade for smaller bills. Thankfully, hotels are great about breaking bills these days, and like the bigger bills. Restaurants too!
Yeah, I know how it is not having money for tips or buying something from the local market. Luckly, there are a lot of restaurants where you can tip using the card.
Rome is on my list for 2019 so I definitely appreciate the tips! The city is absolutely stunning in pictures so I can only imagine
what it looks like in person! Found you on the GLT Blog…keep up the great work!
